Questions That The Government Needs To Urgently Answer About The Sale of Newport Wafer Fab, -,the semiconductor manufacturer, sold to a Chinese company.

Lord Alton of Liverpool to ask Her Majesty’s Government what account it took of national security interests in permitting the sale of Newport Wafer Fab, which makes semiconductors, to a Chinese company.

 

Lord Alton of Liverpool to ask Her Majesty’s Government what account it took of the concern expressed by Ciaran Martin, the U.K.’s former cybersecurity chief, that there were “very real concerns” about the Chinese  buyout of Newport Wafer Fab and that it posed a greater threat than allowing Chinese telecoms firm Huawei to build the U.K.’s 5G network,

 

Lord Alton of Liverpool to ask Her Majesty’s Government why we did not use new powers granted under the National Security and Investment Act to fully review the takeover of a  leading UK compound semiconductor company

 

Lord Alton of Liverpool to ask Her Majesty’s Government whether Newport Wafer Fab is the U.K.’s largest semiconductor plant and whether semiconductors, also known as microchips or chips, are an essential component of electronic devices.

Lord Alton of Liverpool to ask Her Majesty’s Government whether it agrees with the view of  Tony Abbott, the former Australian prime minister and an adviser to the U.K. board of trade, that the sale of  Newport Wafer Fab “would not go ahead were it happening in Australia” and whether they consulted him about why he said that.

Lord Alton of Liverpool to ask Her Majesty’s Government whether discussions were held with the UK’s Five Eyes allies about strategic and security issues raised by the sale of Newport Wafer Fab and, if not, why not.
