During the past decade 27,000 people have died  at the hands of Boko Haram while, over two decades, 19,000 people have been killed by extremist militant Fulanis, with over 43,000 Nigerians – the vast majority women and children – killed by Boko Haram over the same period.A 311-page report, ‘Nigeria’s Silent Slaughter: Genocide in Nigeria and its implications for the International Community’.The failure of the Nigerian and international authorities to act makes them susceptible to prosecution under the Genocide Convention for failing to read the signs, to study the data, and to take action to prevent and protect.

Government fails to answer when asked what assessment they have made of reports that the decline in birth-rates among the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region’s ethnic minority communities may indicate the promotion of a coercive birth-prevention strategy targeted at ethnoreligious minority groups; and whether any such targeted coercive policy would require the UK Government to consider their obligations, as a signatory to the 1948 Convention on the Crime of Genocide, to prevent, protect, and hold to account perpetrators.

Speaking today at an international webinar about the mass atrocities committed in Nigeria, David Alton said that the word “genocide” should never be used lightly but that it was irresponsible to ignore the signs of genocide and  to challenge the dangerous and self serving suggestion that by remaining silent would contribute to the resolution of the conflict and that by attributing the massacres and killings to other motives was wilful blindness.
