Question by Lord Alton of Liverpool

To ask Her Majesty’s Government whether they have had any discussions with the government of Nigeria about that government’s decision to ban Twitter; if so, what response they have received; and if not, whether they plan to do so. (HL828)

Tabled on: 08 June 2021

Answer:
Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon

We are concerned by the Nigerian Government’s suspension of Twitter in Nigeria. Our High Commission in Abuja and likeminded countries issued a statement supporting freedom of expression and representatives met the Nigerian Foreign Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, to discuss the suspension and statement.

Date and time of answer: 21 Jun 2021 at 11:55.

Lord David Alton

For 18 years David Alton was a Member of the House of Commons and today he is an Independent Crossbench Life Peer in the UK House of Lords.
