UK asked how it intends to respond to the Report of Mohamed Abdelsalam Babiker, the UN Special Rapporteur, on the situation of human rights in Eritrea.

The U.K. Government needs to urgently respond to the shocking catalogue of egregious human rights violations detailed in a U.N. Report. These include incommunicado detention, arbitrary arrest and detention, inhumane prison conditions, indefinite national/military service, lack of freedom of expression, opinion, association, religious belief and movement, lack of the rule of law, serious human rights violations in the Tigray region of Ethiopia and other human rights violations being committed by Eritrea.

On Monday I will table Parliamentary questions to the UK Government asking what assessment it has made of the Report of Mohamed Abdelsalam Babiker, the UN Special Rapporteur, on the situation of human rights in
Eritrea and how it intends to respond.

I will ask what action it intends to take to ensure that access to Eritrea for the UN Special Rapporteur is raised at the UN Human Rights Council, whether access has been raised by the UK Ambassador to Asmara with the Eritrean government – and what response was received, how it intends to ensure that the UN Security Council supports the work of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights inEritrea, and responds to his recommendations in his report on human Rights violations in Eritrea and Tigray.
