Terry Wynn, former editor of the Catholic newspaper, the Universe and one time Editor of Liberal News and head of PR for the Liberal Party organisation died last Wednesday in Southend University Hospital. He was being treated for throat cancer, which he had unaccountably contracted. His Requiem Mass will be celebrated in Holy Family Church, 661 High Road, South Benfleet SS7 5SF on Wednesday, May 18 at 10am, followed by interment in Woodside Cemetery.
There will be a reception for friends and parishioners afterwards in the parish St John Bosco Hall, which is part of the church premises. All are most welcome. For any travellers, the parish office telephone number is 01268-799649. A memorial Mass, planned for Terry’s friends in the North of England is at an advanced stage of planning. This will take place on Saturday, June 11 at 10.30am in St John the Baptist Church, Annitsford, Northumberland NE23 7QR and there will also be a reception nearby following Mass.
Terry was an accomplished editor of Liberal News when I was a young MP and then Liberal Chief Whip. I also knew him through his work as Editor of The Universe (for whom, today, I write a weekly column). The news editor tells me that they will profile Terry in this week’s paper. All who knew him will want to express condolences and sympathy on the passing of a good man. Terry gave me huge encouragement in my parliamentary battles for the sanctity of human life and human rights: and he always put his deep faith before all other considerations. all of us who knew him will always be grateful to him for his friendship.
A suitable epitaph for Terry is the extraordinary photograph which he took in 1999 in Westminster Cathedral at the funeral of Cardinal Basil Hume and which was broadcast on the BBC. Terry believed it depicted an image of the Virgin watching over the Cardinal’s coffin. He sent his camera and photograph to Kodak asking if something was wrong with either the film or the camera and was told that both were in perfect working order.

News Report:
Virgin Mary watching over Cardinal Basil Hume during his funeral?
September 15, 1999 – Reported in the BBCnews.com. Was the Virgin Mary watching over Cardinal Basil Hume’s coffin during his funeral? Not watching from heaven, that is, but from within Westminster Cathedral itself? This sighting was captured when two photographers for a Catholic newspaper took pictures of television coverage of Cardinal Hume’s funeral. One, Terence Wynn, says: “What I see is an image on the left hand side of the coffin which looks to me as if it’s female and with its hands joined in prayer.” He admits it is not a clear image, but suggests if you traced a picture of a statue at Lourdes, it would be “almost identical” to his photograph
