Children from Bootle’s Savio Salesian College recently presented me with a Bat-or-Bird Box which they had made. Others have gone to Downing Street and the Palace – and one is on its way to William and Kate in advance of their wedding. The Queen’s Lady-In-Waiting told the Merseyside teenagers that there are many Pipistrelles in the garden at Buckingham Palace and they hoped the box would be used by some of these bats.
The boxes come with the approval of the Bat Conservation Trust and are made by the pupils – and may be used for bats or birds. Along with a new project, working with Kenyan children, and selling on jewellery which has been made in Kenya, the idea is to help conservation while learning how to grow a small business.
Last month I presented some of the young people who had made the boxes with Good Citizenship Awards and their teacher, Mr.Stephen Burrowes, read out the citation before a Roscoe Lecture at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.
The boxes cost £9-99 and further details may be obtained form [email protected]
