Sir, Lord Grabiner KC and Michael Thomas KC criticise Lord Alton of Liverpool for raising concerns about foreign judges sitting for the Hong Kong courts (letters, Nov 21). Perhaps if, like me, they were unable to return home, or had close friends in prison for the “crime” of lighting candles to commemorate the Tiananmen Square massacre, they would think differently about foreign judges legitimising the persecution of the Chinese Communist Party.

Despite the suppression of the rights of girls and women in Afghanistan the Government admits it “has not introduced any Global Human Rights sanctions against the Taliban since they took power in 2021.” Parliament needs to assert oversight of the random and opaque process of Magnitsky Sanctions.
