Washington DC Human Rights Conference This Week Focusing on Religious Freedom – Including Meeting On “Implementing The Duty to Prevent Genocide: Global Approaches’”

Jun 27, 2022 | News

Travelling to Washington to speak at a human rights Summit on Religious Freedom.

During the Conference I will take part in a session on ‘Implementing The Duty to Prevent Genocide: Global Approaches’ on 29th June between1:30 and 2:30 PM.

I will speak on the failures of the UK Gov to monitor early warning signs, analyse and determine cases of genocide and the Genocide Determination Bill (and the recent success to secure a risk assessment for Ethiopia) . I will be joined by:
– Pari Ibrahim – on the missed early warning signs in Iraq before 2014 and their materialisation in the Daesh genocide against the Yazidis in Iraq
– Wai Wai Nu – on the missed early warning signs in Myanmar before 2016 and their materialisation in the Tatmadow genocide against the Rohingya in Myanmar
– Nury Turkel – on the US approach to monitoring early warning signs (incl. Elie Wiesel Act) and the early warning signs in the case of the Uyghurs in Xinjiang, before 2018, and their materialisation.

We will start with a generic question – what changes are needed to ensure that we can deliver on the duty to prevent Genocide and atrocity crimes.

There will be questions from the audience and I will describe the recommendations in the new book on Genocide by myself and DrEwelina Ochab, available on Amazon.
