House of Lords 16th July 2021

Lord Alton of Liverpool:
With Amnesty International’s report detailing arbitrary detention, forced indoctrination, torture, mass surveillance and crimes against humanity – along with newspaper reports from Xinjiang of the destruction of 16,000 mosques –with harrowing evidence being given last week to the Independent Uighur Tribunal, whose brave witnesses and families are now experiencing threats and intimidation, and with further legislatures joining the House of Commons in declaring atrocities against the Uyghurs to be Genocide – when will the UK be raising this report at the UN Human Rights Council and seeking judicial remedies, and will the government commit to cooperating with, examining, and acting on the findings of the Uyghur Tribunal chaired by sir Geoffrey Nice QC?

Question followed by answer from the minister.

Lord David Alton

For 18 years David Alton was a Member of the House of Commons and today he is an Independent Crossbench Life Peer in the UK House of Lords.
