The Times May 4th 2021 – Gladstone described the owning of slaves as “ the foulest crime” and abolition one of the greatest achievements of the period.
As Liverpool University foolishly removes Gladstone’s name from a hall of residence it should study more carefully the story of a man who became Prime Minister four times and who renounced his family’s involvement in the slave trade. Expunging extracts of history that you don’t like, without telling the whole story, diminishes an academic institution and the remarkable achievements of one of Liverpool’s greatest citizens.
