Questions today to the Government about the decision to send Commissioners into the City of Liverpool

Mar 24, 2021 | Parliament

Lord Alton of Liverpool to ask Her Majesty’s Government what role it envisages for the Commissioners being sent by the Local Government Minister to run the planning, highways, and regeneration directorates of Liverpool City Council; what their purpose and objectives will be; and for how long it is anticipated they will be involved in the running of these departments of the City Council.

Lord Alton of Liverpool to ask Her Majesty’s Government to provide details of the “pervasive and rotten culture” within Liverpool City Council and the “culture of intimidation” which has led the Local Government Minister to send Commissioners into the Local Authority.

Lord Alton of Liverpool to ask Her Majesty’s Government to provide details of what the Caller Report identified as a “secret cabal” operating within the Liverpool City Council; which documents have been destroyed in some of the Council’s Departments and what the Local Government Minister has identified as a “serious breakdown of governance at the council.”

Lord Alton of Liverpool to ask Her Majesty’s Government whether Liverpool residents will have to fund the cost of the Caller investigation and the cost of sending in Commissioners; how much it is expected to cost; and to quantify the statement of the Local Government Minister that potentially millions of pounds have been wasted because of the lack of oversight at the Council.

Lord David Alton

For 18 years David Alton was a Member of the House of Commons and today he is an Independent Crossbench Life Peer in the UK House of Lords.
