Dear Lord Alton,
Thank you for your correspondence of 20 November addressed to Lord Ahmad in
regards to the detention of Cui Haoxin. You also raised this issue in your written
parliamentary question HL10558. I am replying as the Minister for Asia.
You raise an important issue and we share your concern at reports of the detention of
Cui Haoxin. The environment for freedom of expression and freedom of religion or belief
in China is becoming increasing restrictive. Although we have not raised this specific
case with the Chinese authorities, we oppose all efforts to curtail freedom of expression
or freedom of speech whether in China or elsewhere.
We have raised media freedoms with the Chinese authorities on a number of occasions
and will always defend the right of journalists to do their job. The UK has also publicly
raised our concerns, and British diplomats have attempted to attend trials of civilian
journalists and rights activists in China to show support.
Please be assured that we will continue to monitor this issue, and any further
developments in this specific case closely.
