Cui Haoxin, Chinese Poet: harassed, interrogated, and arrested

Nov 23, 2020 | News

Over recent months, we have heard about the dire situation of Uyghur Muslims in China and the atrocities perpetrated against the group that may amount to the legal definition of crimes against humanity or even genocide. As we work together to address the atrocities we must not forget about some of the human rights defenders who are risking their lives to shed light on the atrocities.

One of them, Cui Haoxin, a poet and member of the Hui Muslim ethnic group, used his voice to speak against the persecution of Uyghurs. This has resulted in him being reportedly repeatedly harassed and interrogated by Chinese authorities, before his ultimate arrest in January. I have written to Lord Ahmad, Minister for South Asia and the Commonwealth at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), and tabled written parliamentary questions about his case.  We need to stand up for human rights defenders as they stand up for those voiceless.
