Government asked what steps it is taking to ensure that the UK has not and will not be complicit in using Uighur slave labour to produce PPE for the NHS and profits for the Chinese Communist Party

Nov 19, 2020 | Parliament

In an oral question in Parliament today Lord Alton of Liverpool asked Lord Bethell, the Health Minister, this question:

“In a written answer the noble lord the Minister has confirmed to me that the NHS warehouse for PPE at Daventry has masks made by  Medwell Medical.

It is estimated that a quarter of the workers at their Chinese factory are Uighurs – in a facility 3,444 kilometres from Xinjiang – so, implausible, that they went there voluntarily.

In his answer why didn’t the noble lord name the intermediary company involved and will he now say whether it was Meheco or another State owned company; what was the value of the deal; whether our Embassy was involved; whether the UK made the deal before or after July, when Medwell was named in reports; and what steps he is taking to ensure that the UK will not be complicit in using Uighur slave labour to produce PPE for the NHS and profits for the Chinese Communist Party?”

Lord David Alton

For 18 years David Alton was a Member of the House of Commons and today he is an Independent Crossbench Life Peer in the UK House of Lords.
